Coatings for bridges
Nowadays most new bridges are built using modular prefabricated elements which are painted in controlled workshop conditions. This minimizes the need for on-site painting and allows using high-tech paint systems which would be difficult or too costly to apply on site.

Usually, only repair of transportation damage and coating of site-welded areas are required on the building site. Depending on the paint system used, the topcoat can also be applied on site.

Coatings for bridges

Tikkurila has various time-proven paint systems for new bridge construction. Paint systems containing zinc-rich primer such as Temazinc provide the most durable protection against corrosion. See below some examples of paint systems.



The most durable systems for C5 corrosivity categories

Corrosivity category C5-I Very high (industrial) atmospheric-corrosivity category.
Exterior Industrial areas with high humidity and aggressive atmosphere.
Interior Buildings or areas with almost permanent condensation and with high pollution.

Corrosivity category C5-M Very high (marine) atmospheric-corrosivity category.
Exterior Coastal and offshore areas with high salinity.
Interior Buildings or areas with almost permanent condensation and with high pollution.

Durable systems for C3 and C4 corrosivity categories

Corrosivity category C 3 Medium atmospheric-corrosivity category.
Exterior Urban and industrial atmospheres, moderate sulfur dioxide pollution. Coastal areas with low salinity.
Interior Production rooms with high humidity and some air pollution, e.g. food-processing plants, laundries, breweries, dairies.

Corrosivity category C 4 High atmospheric-corrosivity category.
Exterior Industrial areas and coastal areas with moderate salinity.
Interior Chemical plants, swimming pools, coastal ship- and boatyards.
